Dopamine, says Joyce Walsleben, director of the Center for Sleep at New York University, is a club that makes the heart racing, makes them nervous and creates a feeling of elation. If the effect of such stimulants wears off, the crash is extremely unpleasant. Caffeine affects a different chemical pathway to the neurotransmitter adenosine. But this results in the chemical flood in the brain that can shake the hands of the coffee drinker.

Modafinil is quite different: It bypasses the dopamine and limited its activity on the neurological processes that have to do with alertness. It does not seem to act as a broadband stimulus. Incidentally, this is one reason, says Walsleben that modafinil is still not become a street drug: unlike cocaine or amphetamines does not make it high, and the effect does not occur until hours after ingestion.
